Our Rooms and Garden

Out in Musselburgh

Baby Room (0-2 years)

In our Baby Room our highly experienced staff team care for children under 1 year of age, our minimum staff ratio in our baby room is one member of staff to every three children and were possible this number will be lower. Our priority is to create a home away from home for your baby where they can grow and develop in a safe and stimulating environment.

We offer a wide variety of activities and opportunities for your baby to participate in. We try to get outdoors as often as possible and our babies enjoy walks around our local community as well as picnics in the park and visits to local landmarks.

We ask that you bring a supply of nappies and milk to nursery to ensure continuity between home and nursery for your baby. We are a breast feeding friendly nursery and support mothers returning to work who still wish to breast feed. Our staff are trained in the storage and use of breast milk and we welcome you visiting to feed during the day where possible.

Around the time of your baby’s 1st birthday and once they have found their feet, your child’s key worker will look to arrange a meeting with yourself to discuss your baby moving to through to our Tweenie room.

Tweenies Room (0-2 years)

Our Tweenie Room has an extensive range of quality toys and activities to aid the continuing development of your child in our nursery. Your child will be free to choose to participate in a range of activities as well as having the opportunity to play freely with the wide variety of resources on offer.

Our minimum staff to child ratio in our Tweenie Room is one member of staff to every three children, again were possible this number will be lower.

By adopting a more challenging and varied approach to the day, the period in the Tweenie Room provides for a smooth transition to our Toddler Room once you’re your child is around 2 years of age. We will always discuss the transition process with you before any room changes happen.

Toddler Room (2-3 years)

Our Toddler Room provides a structured day with a greater choice of learning opportunities including arts and crafts, construction activities, cooking and baking experiences and much more. We will introduce early numeracy and literacy through play based activities designed to develop your child’s communication skills. Our minimum staff to child ratio in our Toddler Room is one member of staff to every five children.

During your child’s time in our Toddler Room, we will aim to provide them with a wide range of experiences and opportunities to develop their confidence and independence, ready for their transition to our 3-5s Room.

3-5s Room

Honest Toun Nursery is recognised as a 3-5 year old centre by the local Education Department. In our 3-5s Room children will follow the Curriculum for Excellence. Your child will progress to the 3-5s Room at around 3 years of age and stay in this room until they go off to school!

Our minimum staff to child ratio in our 3-5s Room is one member of staff to every eight children.

Our 3-5yrs children benefit from an extensive variety of resources and activities which are available both indoors as well as outdoors. Our 3-5yrs children also benefit from being visited by our local teacher who offers more focused learning opportunities for your child to get involved with.

We pride ourselves on ensuring that when children leave nursery to move on to school, they do so confidently and independently, whilst taking with them the enjoyment of learning and a pride in their achievements.

Our Garden and Outdoor Play

We love to get outside at Honest Toun Nursery where we have two large outdoor play areas. Children find opportunities to get fresh air and have fun in a safe and secure area. Our gardens are split into 0-3 years and over 3 years so all children have access to age appropriate activities and equipment. In the younger age group we have a large sand pit, many push-along toys, climbing equipment and ‘no mow’ grass.  We believe there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing!

Our older children have a large bark area with a great climbing frame, lots of  planting areas, a summer house and large physical equipment for endless fun and games. We also have a mud kitchen and loose parts for building! We ask that parents provide their children with appropriate clothing for all types of weather from wellington boots to sunglasses.

Our youngest children are often seen out in our double buggies enjoying the fresh air, sights and sounds of the local community. We use Walkodile Child Safety Systems and high visibility vests to keep children safe when out on trips away from the nursery.
